At the 52nd Newark Black Film Festival, just minutes before Atelier: The Story of BrownMill Company screened to a sold-out audience, models began walking through the aisles of the Newark Museum’s Billy Johnson Auditorium. Each model wore a head-to-toe look from BrownMill Company’s one-of-one archive.

The surprise exhibition transformed the auditorium into an immersive fashion experience, celebrating the film’s release through BrownMill’s distinct designs. Titled BrownMill: A One-of-One, this exhibition was produced and cast by Studio Jenev, Jenevesque Media’s creative direction division, in partnership with BrownMill Company. The show marked BrownMill’s first-ever runway presentation and gave audiences another way to experience the film beyond a traditional screening.

BrownMill Head of Operations Elijah Pitt Goodson and Creative Director Jennifer Edwards led the curation, styling each look to reflect the brand’s history, craftsmanship, and creative identity. Tristan Jones, a former BrownMill sales specialist and featured actor in the film, also contributed as co-producer, assistant stylist, and finale model.

“I wasn’t ready for the level of fashion when I’d walked in,” said Lawrence Krayn, a reporter for The Newarker, reflecting on the unexpected runway presentation. “This was more than a simple film premiere; it was something beyond that, and something new entirely…a unique cultural phenomenon.”

Beyond the spectacle, each look offered a closer look at the ideas, materials, and cultural influences behind BrownMill’s designs. Straight from Goodson’s styling notes, we are taking a closer look at the stories behind the garments and the meaning woven into the collection.

Classic schoolgirl prep gets a BrownMill twist through playful layering, patchwork, and accessories that celebrate individuality. Look 1 pairs a red plaid patchwork button-down shirt with a color-blocked knit cardigan draped over the shoulders. A denim mini skirt, BrownMill’s signature socks, and strappy black open-toe shoes complete the look.

Look 4 continues the same aesthetic with a one-of-one BrownMill button-down shirt and patchwork jeans. The standout accessory is a braided hair necktie sourced from #RUCrown, a student-led collective at Rutgers University–Newark that celebrates Black hair.

This signature BrownMill look embodies our modern take on classic schoolgirl prep. “Inspired by the importance of education, it reflects our belief in encouraging our community to pursue knowledge, dream boldly, and Think Bigger in every aspect of life,” says Goodson.

Both the top and pants featured in Look 4 are one-of-one designs, handcrafted from upcycled materials and carefully selected fabrics. Each garment reflects BrownMill’s commitment to sustainability and individual expression, turning familiar wardrobe staples into truly irreplicable pieces.

“Our mission is to educate, inspire, and preserve the legacy of our ancestors and community leaders through wearable storytelling,” says Goodson. “Every Reference Tee serves as a conversation piece, encouraging others to learn, reflect, and celebrate the individuals whose contributions continue to inspire future generations.”

Through this recurring collection, BrownMill merges history and contemporary fashion, inviting wearers to engage with the people and stories represented on each shirt.
